Abstract

The profile of puerperae and their recently born children at the Hospital & Maternidade Santa Casa de Campo Mourão, Campo Mourão PR Brazil, was analyzed and a possible association between data was verified. A quantitative study was undertaken between February and April 2009 in which 102 puerperae and their recently born babies were analyzed. Results showed that 71.5% of puerperae were within the 20-35 age bracket, mean age 24 years; 78.4% had a family income of up to two minimum wages and 33.3% finished high school. Mean anthropometric rates of puerperae were: height: 1.60 m; pre-pregnancy weight: 58.7 kg; pregnancy weight gain (PWG): 12.7 kg; pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI): 22.74. With regard to data on recently born children, 84.3% weighed over 2500g at birth; 53.9% were shorter than 48 cm; 85.2% had a cephalic perimeter over 32cm; 72.5% had thorax perimeter over 32cm. It was verified that the higher the PWG, the greater is the weight and the length of the baby. In the case of smoking women, 85.7% of the recently born babies were shorter than 48cm. Results show that the puerperal profile may have an association with the health of the recently born baby; that most puerperae had an adequate profile for the period; that the babies had a general trend for survival
