Physical Activities and Coronary Pathology: Profile of Users of a Physical Training Academy for the Elderly in Maringá PR Brazil

Abstract

Physical activity is a decisive factor in the prevention and treatment of coronary pathologies. Thirty users of a physical training academy for elderly people in Maringá PR Brazil underwent the Coronary Diseases Risk Test and answered the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) to verify the prevalence of risk factors for coronary diseases and physical exercises readiness. Results show that 80% of interviewed were prepared for physical activities without medical supervision even though all who fitted within the category had two or more risk factors for the development of heart conditions. On the other hand, 46.10% were classified as sedentary and could be included within the risk population for the development of heart diseases. Results showed that physical activities contributed towards a healthy life without illnesses when executed according to the clinical features of the individual and with adequate regularity.
