Abstract

Malign tumors are the main focus of immunotherapy for treatment and prevention. Although cancerous cells are less immunogenic than microorganisms, the immunological system recognizes and eliminates tumor cells. However, similar to the activity of parasites that develop escape mechanisms to the immune system, tumors also evade in several ways and frequently interfere in the immune responses against them. In recent years, much progress has been made in cancer immunotherapy through a deeper knowledge on cell and molecular immunology for the development of efficacious and warranted immune-modulating strategies, with an increase in anti-tumor responses.
