Anti-Oxidant Activity and Phenolic Compounds of Maytenus ilicifolia and Maytenus aquifolium

Abstract

Maytenus ilicifolia and Maytenus aquifolium, popularly known as "espinheira-santa" in Brazil, are medicinal plants, native to Brazil, and used in popular medicine against inflammations, tumors, leukemia and in the treatment of digestive problems. The anti-oxidant ability and quantity of total phenolic compounds in the leaves of Maytenus ilicifolia and Maytenus aquifolium were evaluated. Aqueous and ethanol extracts were prepared from the dry leaves in concentrations 1000, 500, 250 and 125 g/mL-1. Total phenols were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method and the quantitative analysis of the anti-oxidant activity was performed by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical method. Rutin, gallic acid and ascorbic acid were positive controls. The rates of phenolic compounds in all concentrations were higher in the aquous extract of M. ilicifolia, followed by its ethanol extract and by the alcoholic extract of M. aquifolium. The anti-oxidant activity of the aqueous and ethanol extract of Maytenus ilicifolia and Maytenus aquifolium were compared to those of ascorbic acid, gallic acid and rutin. The two species of the “espinheira-santa” have high anti-oxidant potential.
