Abstract

Current research analyzed the occurrence of post-extubation stridor in patients with congenital cardiopathy when compared with patients with heart conditions and Down´s syndrome in an Intense Care Unit. Patients in a hospital´s children post-operation unit were included. Patients were divided into two groups: Group I (G1) comprised 36 patients with Down´s syndrome and congenital cardiopathy; Group 2 (G2) comprised patients with congenital cardiopathy without Down´s syndrome. Patients of both groups were extubated when adequate, after which the occurrence of the stridor signal was analyzed. Among the patients with post-extubation stridor, the patients who needed re-intubation were analyzed in both groups. Eleven patients in G1 had post-extubation stridor and 26 patients in G2, or rather, patients with congenital cardiopathy without Down´s syndrome, had a post-extubation stridor. In the case of re-intubation in G1, one patient was re-intubated because of the occurrence of the event, whereas 10 patients were re-intubated in G2. No difference occurred between the age averages of the two groups. No difference between the weights of the two groups in patients with stridor was detected. Results show considerable differences in the occurrence of post-extubation stridor in the groups of current research.
