Abstract

The prevalence of recurring pregnancy in adolescents (RPA), social, sexual, gynecological and obstetric profile of RPA is analyzed, coupled to an investigation on the family context and other related variables. Research was performed retrospectively and prospectively. The first part comprised 2158 clinical charts ranging between January 2008 and January 2012. The prospective section comprised 252 adolescent pregnant females of whom 54 were included in the RPA sample. All participants were attended at the Obstetric Center (OC) of the University Hospital of Santa Maria (HUSM), Santa Maria RS Brazil, between February and August 2010. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Spearman´s correlation test at 0.05 significance level. RPA prevalence in the retrospective research reached 19.9% within a 5-year period and the number of pregnancies in each adolescent varied between 2 and 6. The prospective research demonstrated that RPAs in Santa Maria was characterized by low socio-economical and educational level and low age bracket, with a mean 17.2 years. Further, 56% of the participants lived with their mother when they were children and schooling occurred when the baby was born (58%). The fathers of the children in current pregnancy were 10 years older than RPAs and in 52% of the cases the children had the same father of the previous pregnancy. Results show the prevalence of adolescents with recurrent pregnancy, contributing towards the permanence of the poverty cycle, low schooling and less future possibilities.
