Abstract

This study analyzed, retrospectively, the consumption of medicines during gestation in mothers of patients who carry congenital malformations (CM). Results were gotten through the analysis of 68 medical records of patients with CM assisted by Associação Norte Paranaense de Reabilitação during the period January 1999 to June 2004. We considered the types of CM, use of drugs and/or drugs of abuse during the gestation, type of substance used, planning of pregnancy, prenatal assistance, presence of infections during the gestation and abortion attempts. The most common CM found were hydroencephalus and myelomeningocele. In 63,2% of the medical records the use of medicines in the gestation period was reported, but the substance was described in only 23.5% of cases had the substance used. 12.1% of the substances reported are considered high teratogenic risk. The prevalence of the use of drugs of abuse was approximately 4.4%, being alcohol the most common substance. In 19.1% of medical reports some kind of infection during gestation was detected. Information on prenatal and planning of pregnancy has not been found. There were two cases of abortion attempts. Results demonstrate that the cases of CM may be related to the use of drugs during gestation due to a high percentage of drugs use with high teratogenic risk. Therefore, it is important to intensify public policies on health, such as the Program of Family and Health, to help pregnants make more rational use of medicines during pregnancy.
