Abstract

Nowadays, there is a strong sociocultural tendency to consider thinness the ideal situation of acceptation, self-control and competency. However, the number of obese and morbid obese increases all over the world. Among the treatments of this pathology, the bariatric surgery appears to be a great technique to assist the clinical conduction in some cases of obesity. The purpose of the study is to assess the satisfaction with the body image of people who were submitted to this surgery at least one year and a half ago. The study population was constituted by 15 women and 15 men from ages between 20 and 59 years and 11 months old. The nutritional status was valued based on the Body Mass Index (BMI) related. The perception of body image was obtained by self-assessment, by the use of a scale of body silhouettes. The ‘Body Shape Questionnaire’ was used to analyze the satisfaction concerning the body. The results showed that both women and men are satisfied with their body image and also showed a small evolution in weight gain related to the time elapsed since the operation, in the female group. This confirms the necessity of a multidisciplinary post-surgery follow-up, involving doctor, psychologist, nutritionist and physical educator, in order to promote improvement and maintenance of the result of the surgery.
