Abstract

The dentistry for infants, seeking infancy care, has as an objective the promotion of oral health. Its primary goal is to provide ideal conditions for the proper development of the child’s stomatognathic system. The objective was to outline the profile of mothers and children that attended to the clinic for babies in NIS III - Iguaçu, in Maringá - PR. For the data collection it was used clinical records, randomly selected, referring to children who entered the program between the years 1998 and 2004. The results, obtained by percentage, shows that in most cases, the mothers are in between 21 to 28 years old (52.5%) are married (83.3%) and have only one child (61.5 %), and have family income of two to three minimum salaries (40.4%). Related to the children, the majority was still being breastfed and 39.6% of them with chocolate and milk bottles and / or mixed milk flour. The first dental care occurred between five and twelve months of the babies. After nine years of introducing dental care to the children, 71.3% of them were free of caries. It was observed that the program helps to maintain oral health by providing a better approach in education and prevention of dental caries, and prioritizes the users of the public health system.
