Abstract

Edentulous span size (prosthetic span) directly affects diagnosis and prognosis in patients’ rehabilitation with bone-integrated implants since there is a direct relationship between span, number, length and diameter of implants. One of the indications in the edentulous jaw is protocol prostheses, initially defined by Branemark and colleagues, that only six implants within the mental foramen region support 12 fixed prosthetic elements. Current research evaluates the span between mental foramens of both mandibular antimeres. Experiment was approved by the Ethics Committee. A descriptive analysis was undertaken with 120 mandibles (60 without teeth and 60 with teeth) of individuals of both sexes, different age brackets and racial groups. Span between foramens was measured by high precision flexible millimeter scale. After the application of Student’s t test (p<0.05), results showed that there was no statistically significant difference between mean span between mandibles with teeth (54.25mm) or without teeth (54.43mm). Results also indicate that the loss of all mandibular teeth and the subsequent bone’s physiological re-absorption do not alter the transversal positioning of the mental foramens. Means suggest a maximum of six bone-integrated implants between the mental foramens, with a 3mm minimal span between implants and standard diameter of 4.1mm of prosthetic platform.
