Abstract

In recent years it has increased the interest in medicinal plants, which constitute important sources of bioactive compounds and currently have been incorporated in various pharmaceutical formulations so masterly industrialized or manipulated. Several plants have been studied, such as the Indian clove, a world known plant which is attracting the attention of many researchers, by presenting various cosmetic and medical uses, such as antiseptic, insecticide, fungicide, and other analgesic actions. The Indian clove, that comes from a tree called Caryophyllus aromaticus L., has in its essential oil composition, the main substance known as eugenol. This study aimed to develop formulations for topical use, such as lotions and gel, using the Indina clove essential oil. In the lotion development were used non-ionic and anionic bases, and the gels were used for the natrosol and carbopol gel. The essential oil was incorporated into the base, where it was added in the gels, along with compounds with surfactant action as the ethoxylate propoxilated cetyl alcohol to avoid turbidity. It was made the quality control and the stability study of the formulations developed, and verified the organoleptic and pH characteristics for a certain time and in samples exposed to different temperatures. Based on the results, it appears that the carbopol gel and anionic base lotion are suitable for the clove essential oil incorporation, and the natrosol gel and non-ionic lotion were not compatible, since they showed changes during the stability study.
