Abstract

The post-transplant mellitus diabetes (PTMD) is a relatively common complication and its occurrence is mainly related to the use of immunosuppressants. Evaluate the incidence of diabetes mellitus after renal transplantation in the western region of Paraná state. Retrospectively studied the records of all patients undergoing kidney transplantation in Cascavel-PR. There were performed 256 transplants in the period from 09/14/1985 to 04/30/2008, and 58 with were dead donors and 198 with alive donors. There were recorded: age, sex, race, date of transplantation, HLA compatibility, donor type, disease, duration of dialysis, dialysis modality, ischemia time, presence or absence of acute rejection, presence or absence of acute tubular necrosis, type of immunosuppression, progression to death and complications, including post-transplant diabetes. The data were stored in the program Microsoft Excel database, and have been calculated the average of continuous variables and the relative frequencies. There were excluded 14 patients who had DM before the kidney transplant. It was calculated the incidence of DM post-transplant. DM post-transplant was diagnosed in 19 (7.9%) patients aged of 40.5 ± 14.1 years old, 52.6% were male, 89.5% of the white race and follow-up time was of 123.8 ± 82.7 months. The average length of dialysis were of 21.3 ± 16.9 months. Donors were haplo identical in 49.2% of the cases, identical in 28.1% and dead in 22.7%. There was no retransplantation. The DM incidence after kidney transplantation in our study was low compared with the literature studied.
