Abstract

The dental agenesis is defined by numerical decrease, characterized by the absence of one or more teeth. The agenesis can also be called partial anodontia, hypodontia or oligodontia. The diagnosis is clear through clinical suspicion and radiographic confirmation. The third molar are the most affected, followed by the upper lateral incisors and second lower premolars. First and second molars are rarely involved. It was carried out an analysis of panoramic radiographs from the archives of orthodontic documentation of patients from the teaching clinic for graduation in Dentistry and postgraduate studies in Orthodontics of CESUMAR (University Center of Maringá), in Maringá, PR, Brazil. Establishing the prevalence of tooth agenesis of the third molar, the study aimed at relating the most involved genre, as well as the teeth and/or co-relation between teeth involved. In the present study, 135 panoramic radiographs of patients 8 to 21 years old were analyzed, with dental agenesis detected in 49% of them, with prevalence in females. It was established a comparison between groups of teeth involved, with higher incidence of the absence of teeth 18, 28, 38 and 48.
