Theology and ecology: contributions of christian theology in addressing the environmental crisis

The theme of the environmental crisis is a constant in global news. According to the 2023 IPCC report, global surface warming since 1970 has been the fastest in the last 2,000 years. Discussions and actions to mitigate and/or reverse these trends are also underway. To contribute to this debate, this study aims to examine the issue by considering the relevance of the Christian episteme (knowledge framework) within the Brazilian context. Thus, it argues that churches can play a fundamental role in shaping the cultural framework of responses to environmental challenges. Through bibliographic research, it concludes that, although underexplored, there is room for environmental discussions within the religious sphere, as Latin American theologies provide a promising foundation for churches to actively engage in addressing the environmental crisis, thereby contributing to redefining humanity’s relationship with the environment.
