Control of Nematodes in Tomato Plants with Mutant Isolates of Paecilomyces lilacinus

Abstract
The effect of three different isolates of Paecilomyces lilacinus in the control of Meloidogyne incognita 3 and Meloidogyne javanica was evaluated. Experiment was performed in a greenhouse, between November 2008 and May 2009, with a randomized design comprising 10 treatments and 3 repetitions. P. lilacinus isolates were PAE 69 (endophyte isolade), 2K and RG3 (mutant isolates). Inoculum was produced in sterilized cooked rice and the production of nematode eggs was undertaken in tomato plants, Santa Clara cultivar, during 60 days. They were inoculated with 4000 eggs/nematode juveniles and 50 g colonized rice (109 spores. g-1 rice). After 45 days, number of galls and egg mass per root system were evaluated. Results showed that no decrease in plant parasitism by nematodes occurred with the three P. lilacinus isolates when compared to control (p-rate>0.05). Since M. incognita produces significantly (p-rate = 0.0003) a larger egg mass per gall than M. javanica, a greater reproduction capacity of the former species has been shown. Within the context of current study, the fungus isolates analyzed were not efficient for the biological control of M. incognita 3 and M. javanica.
