Evaluation of Environmental Noise: Monitoring and Characterization of Background Noise in Maringá PR Brazil
Keywords:
Statistical Indexes (L90, L50, L10), Sound Equivalent Level (LEQ), Background Noise.
Abstract
Noise is daily introduced in the environment people live in. Noise provokes mental and physical discomfort that may trigger health problems and loss of life quality to the local population. Current study analyzes the noise background in Maringá PR Brazil, by noise monitoring with a sound pressure meter at three city sites. Each site was observed during 5 minutes and data collected every 10 seconds. Sound intensity levels and statistical indexes L10, L50 and L90 were calculated for an analysis of noise at the three sites. Results were compared with standards on ideal sound pressure levels for these specific city zones. Since rates were higher than those established by the city’s planning directory, suggestions were forwarded to minimize background noise so that life quality could be improved.
