Abstract

With the increase of arterial hypertension in the Brazilian population, it has become essential to point out to undergraduate students the need for a thorough clinical examination of patients, and the special care with high blood pressure patients, especially in a surgical clinic where complications may be severe. The objective of this work has been to assess the number of high blood pressure patients that come the Surgical Clinic of the Dentistry course of CESUMAR, and find out if these patients knew that they had the disease and how to treat it. Arterial blood pressure was taken from 221 patients, 93 male and 128 female. The results showed 23 patients classified as having normal blood pressure; 101 were in the pre-stage of the disease; 49 in stage 1; 48 in stage 2. The authors set out to carry out a revision of the literature regarding the implications of the changes in blood pressure, and attempted to establish its incidence, knowledge the patients had and its repercussions in dental treatment.
