Abstract

Orodispersive films (ODFs) are fine films that may be used as drug vectors for direct absorption in the oral cavity. It is a new pharmaceutical mode highly promising to conventional systems of oral administration. There is an increasing interest in the development of ODFs by researchers and industries, coupled to an increasing search for renewable and low cost sources of material for their manufacture. Manioc starch and gelatin-based biopolymer film formulations were developed and the film´s permeability to water vapor, intumescence degree and solubility according to time and mechanical properties were characterized. Films produced with the highest plastification rates (glycerol and sucrose) had the greatest intumescence and solubility rates. In fact, they were highly promising in ODF formulation.
