The fungi Sclerotium rolfsii and Macrophomina phaseolina are soilborne pathogens that cause disease in many plants. The management of these diseases is difficult due to the production of resistance structures that guarantee their survival over long periods of time. Sangra d'água (Croton urucurana) presents allelopathic activity with the potential to be used as a substrate in composting and in reducing the intensity of root diseases. The objective of this work was to evaluate the inhibition of growth of S. rolfsii with the use of an aqueous extract of sangra d'água and the effect of the compost of sangra d'água on southern blight of tomato. The inhibitory effect of an aqueous extract of sangra d’água on fungal growth was evaluated by adding different doses to the culture medium in which the fungi were cultivated. Only the highest concentration (30 g of leaves.100 mL-1) inhibited the growth of S. rolfsii. No inhibitory effect on the growth of M. phaseolina was observed at any of the doses. Another experiment was carried out with organic compost from sangra d'água leaves incorporated into the substrate for the production of tomato seedlings. At 21 days after sowing, inoculation of S. rolfsii was performed. The dry and green mass of shoots and roots and the population of S. rolfsii in the substrate were evaluated. The incorporation of the organic compost has an effect on reducing the population of S. rolfsii in the substrate; however, the compost did not include the mortality of the plants.
