Urban air pollution, particularly from particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), represents a major environmental and public health issue that requires continuous monitoring. This study evaluated the influence of an urban green area on air quality in Novo Hamburgo, southern Brazil, by comparing two contrasting sites: the Henrique Luís Roessler Municipal Park (“Parcão”) and a high-traffic roadway (Barão de Santo Ângelo and Sapiranga streets). Seventeen simultaneous sampling campaigns were conducted, totaling 68 samples of PM2.5 and PM10. Average concentrations in the park were 5.58 ?g/m³ and 9.26 ?g/m³, while in the traffic site they reached 14.97 ?g/m³ and 25.76 ?g/m³, respectively, showing a significant difference. Compounds such as benzo[a]pyrene, chrysene, and benzo[b]fluoranthene were detected up to 0.910 ng/m³ at the traffic site, whereas in the park, most samples were below the quantification limit. The results demonstrate that urban vegetation effectively reduces atmospheric pollutants, acting as a physical and biochemical barrier. These findings highlight the essential role of green areas in mitigating air pollution and protecting public health, emphasizing the need for public policies focused on the conservation and expansion of urban vegetation and on systematic air quality monitoring.
