Abstract

This study evaluated the technical and environmental performance of hexane and ethanol as solvents in soybean oil extraction using modeling and simulation in the COCO Simulator. The simulations reproduced a seven-stage countercurrent extraction system, enabling the determination of extraction yield, oil-phase purity, solvent efficiency, and residual oil content in the meal. Hexane showed higher technical performance, with a 99.5 % extraction yield and lower residual oil content, while ethanol reached a 99 % yield but with greater retention in the solid matrix. Despite the technical advantages of hexane, ethanol demonstrated superior environmental performance, lower toxicity, renewability, and greater operational safety. The integrated analysis indicated that the renewable solvent aligns with contemporary demands for sustainability, emission reduction, and compliance with environmental policies. The results confirm the technical feasibility of ethanol as a green alternative to hexane and reinforce the role of process simulation as a strategic tool for the development of more efficient and sustainable technologies in the vegetable oil industry.
