Abstract

Sewerage sludge from a Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) was analyzed as a fertilizing agent in the culture of tobacco and oats. Three treatments from each culture were studied: treatment without any fertilizers; treatment with STP sludge as fertilizer; treatment with mineral fertilizer. Parameters included plant development, health aspects, nutritional aspects and the presence of metals. Results were positive with regard to STP sludge as fertilizers in the cultures under analysis. The use of STP sludge in oats culture had similar results as mineral fertilization with regard to growth, development and productivity. High rates of total protein were registered in oats with fertilization and a higher rate of crude fibers was reported in oats with mineral fertilization. Crops were not contaminated by coliforms and salmonella. Tobacco plants with mineral fertilization and STP sludge had similar development (healthy plants); the opposite occurred with plants without any fertilization. They had a lower development rate and lower growth rates. STP sludge has a great capacity as fertilizer for tobacco and oats crops.
