Acid-lactic bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus are highly important on the market due to their probiotic effects and processing of lactic products. These bacteria synthesize enzymes with industrial interests such as ?-galactosidases (lactase). However, large-scale production of the product is expensive due to the formulation of culture medium. Consequently, alternatives for total or partial replace are important. Photosynthetizing micro-organisms´ metabolic liquid (ML) may be an option due to the amount of vitamins, sugars and proteins released in the medium. ML reuse is interesting for the commercial production of L. acidophilus to reduce costs and avoid environmental contamination. Current study evaluates the growth of L. acidophilus and the production of ?-galactosidases in culture media with ML of photosynthetizing micro-organisms. L. acidophilus was cultivated in a conventional medium with different concentrations of metabolic liquid of four photosynthetizing micro-organisms (Artrhospira platensis, Dunaliella tertiolecta, Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus sp.) during 72 h, at 37ºC. Every 24h, cell growth and enzyme ?-galactosidases production were evaluated. Highest growth rates were, as a rule, reported in media with 25% and 50% of ML after a 24-h culture. Best condition comprised 50% of ML of C. vulgaris, with more than 60% and 90% of cell growth and ?-galactosidases production, respectively, when compared to conventional medium. Results show that it may be an alternative liquid residue in the partial replacement of the medium by the growth of L. acidophilus and the production of ?-galactosidases.References
