State, Nation and Language: Identity Conflicts on the Portuguese Language within the Process of Nationalization of Education (1930-1937)
Keywords:
Nationalization of Education, Immigrants’ Colony Schools, Language.
Abstract
The most recent migratory flow in Brazil started in the 19th century with thousands of Europeans coming to the southeastern and southern regions of the country. These immigrants established colony centers, and their schools, maintained by their descendents, became sites in which identity relationships could be analyzed. Language was an important factor in the formation of the colonies and their schools. Current analysis investigates the role of language as a central factor in immigrants’ colony schools and as the main focus of the nationalization of education during the1930-1937 period.
