Morphometric and physiological characteristics of seeds of buckwheat during maturing

Abstract

There has been a healthy increase of interest for gluten-less grains to replace common wheat as food. Buckwheat grains have a promising agro-industrial application due to recent research on its high nutrition quality and its lack of gluten. Current investigation evaluates the physical and physiological changes during buckwheat seed development collected after 30, 37, 44 and 52 days after florescence. The production of buckwheat seed occurred in dystrophic red latosol during the 2019 winter crop, in Dourados MS Brazil. Floral stalks were identified for seed collection in four distinct periods after florescence. Seeds were evaluated with regard to size, fresh and dry mass, water rate, germination, fast aging, field emergence and seedling performance. Totally randomized assay was conducted with four replications. Water rate of seeds at 30 days after florescence reached 65.5% and reduced gradually to 28.6% at the end of maturation, with 52 days after florescence. Size and dry mass of seeds increased continually during development till maximum size at 52 days after florescence. On the 30th day after florescence when dry matter started to accumulate, the seeds had a capacity of forming normal seedlings (58%). However, after 44 days after florescence, seed germination decreased concomitantly to the acquisition of dormancy during maturation.
