World demand in clean energy is on the increase, especially electricity and biofuels such as ethanol. Although biofuel emit low CO2 rates, there is at present a discussion on what actually characterizes clean energy due to social, economic and environmental impacts of production. Current paper identifies the assets and negative impacts caused by the production of sugarcane-based energy in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, and evaluates economic, social and environmental sustainability. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for economic, social and environmental treatments was employed for data on the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, ranking fourth in Brazilian production. Results suggest that the social aspect is the most relevant to determine the establishment of an sugar-based factory in the state coupled to the fact that sugar-based energy chains have more positive than negative impacts.Downloads
