Quality of sheep wool of the Corriedale breed of naturally colored or white phenotype

Keywords: Natural fiber, Micronage, Sheep, Sustainable

Abstract

White and naturally colored Corriedale sheep is compared with the main quality characteristics of wool. Wool samples from 112 Corriedale ewes from two phenotype groups (56 white and 56 naturally colored) were evaluated by the Optical Fiber Diameter Analysis (OFDA 2000®). Data were submitted to variance analysis to evaluate the effect of the phenotype group, whereas averages were compared by F test. Fiber diameter, the coefficient of diameter variation, the statistical distribution of the fibers that fall short of average diameter of the sample, the number of micromes that deviate from the average diameter of 5% of the thickest fibers, thread quality and the curvature of the fibers had higher rates in naturally colored animals (p<0.05). According to the Brazilian wool classification system, most samples were classified as Cruza 2. Results show that white and naturally colored Corriedale ewes have distinct characteristics in qualitative aspects of wool fibers, although within the recommended standards for the breed.
