Abstract

Bio-engineering advances bring to the fore new conflicts and unimaginable debates. Through new disciplines such as Bioethics and Bio-laws, Philosophy and Law provide responses to real issues. Research on embryonic cell stems is one of the most polemic issues developed by the new biological sciences. The required permission to develop research work, such as the use of human embryos, forwards the problem of the right to live and of possible disrespect to the dignity of the human person and its rights. Brazilian law on this issue, called the Bio-safety Law, was judged by the High Federal Court, which defined it as valid and constitutional. It follows the modern trend for research whilst respecting important criteria.
