Abstract

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the name given to a group of viruses that includes more than 100 types, capable of causing lesions on the skin or mucosa. They are classified as low risk and high risk considering the possibility of cancer of uterine cervix. They belong to the most common group of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) nowadays. Concerning that, a vaccine against HPV was recently developed, aiming at preventing the infection through the virus, reducing the number of patients that might develop cancer of uterine cervix due to the HPV. There are two vaccines being sold in Brazil: the tetravalent, which protects against HPV 6,11,16,18 and the bivalent, which protects from HPV 16 and 18. In this context, the present study aimed at performing a systematic review of literature on HPV in order to describe and demonstrate the advantages of using the vaccine to protect against HPV. In this study it was concluded that the HPV vaccine is an important tool in controlling the cancer of uterine cervix. Its implementation in the Unified Health System (SUS) will benefit, over the years, millions of women threatened by cancer of the uterine cervix. This means a step forward to protect mainly women who have not yet started sexual life as well as improving the health system in developing countries.
