Characteristics of Amputations of Lower Limbs of Patients Listed at the Apucarana Association of Disabled People

Abstract

Amputation is the surgical or traumatic removal of a body member. After amputation, the patient should be examined in detail by a multidisciplinary team, a physiotherapist included, whose role is the patient’s rehabilitation. Agency in daily and work activities and social inclusion are among its main aims. Current investigation analyzes the profile of lower limbs amputees in Apucarana PR Brazil. Data from patients’ registers were collected at the Association of Disabled People of Apucarana (ADEFIAP). The study included forty patients with lower limbs amputations, 22 (55%) were males and 18 (45%) were females, within the age bracket 18 - 71 years and an average of 43.86 years for males; and within the age bracket 21 - 77 years and an average of 52.11 years for females. Further, 72.72% of amputations were traumatic in etiology and amputation at trans-femoral level occurred in 59.09% of male patients. In the case of females, 27.77% of amputations occurred because of vascular etiology and 27.77% due to traumatic etiology. However, trans-tibia amputation was predominant with 72.22% of female cases. Results show that programs for the prevention of accidents and vascular diseases should be established and more studies related to the area should be undertaken.
