Abstract

The objective of this study was to describe the perceptions of professionals working in Primary Health Care regarding the care provided to deaf individuals. This was a cross-sectional, exploratory, descriptive, and quantitative study that used a semi-structured form to identify the difficulties faced by professionals when assisting deaf patients. A total of 31 professionals participated, of whom 83.87% (n = 26) reported feeling insecure during care, and although all acknowledged the importance of learning Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), 61.29% (n = 19) had not pursued any course or training, justifying this lack of engagement by limited time or opportunities. It was identified that the difficulties are not related solely to knowledge of Libras, but also to a lack of interest in learning about the linguistic, cultural, and personal particularities of deaf individuals, and it was observed that the different communication resources used by health professionals did not provide effective security in delivering comprehensive and qualified health care to this population.
