Abstract

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a painful syndrome of unknown etiology, with variable painful symptoms, highly difficult to diagnose and which often misleads clinical diagnosis. Current analysis reviews the literature on TN, highlighting the reasons leading to a mistake in diagnosis and the implications of inappropriate treatments for patients. Literature on TN diagnosis shows that it is crucial that all dental surgeons have basic knowledge on different painful problems that affect the mouth-face region. They must also elaborate an integrated diagnosis consistent with mouth-face pain reported by their patients through a detailed clinical history and clinical and complementary exams. They may thus rule out the presence of other mouth-face diseases which may have similar symptoms to those of TN and thereby avoid performance of unnecessary dental procedures in NT cases.
