Abstract

Referred to as an epidemic, obesity is a disease that may affect the subject’s health, whereas asthma and its high prevalence partakes common factors with the former and has a direct influence on lung volume and capacity. Current analysis investigates by means of a bibliographical review the influence of overweight and obesity on the respiratory system of children and adolescents and their relationship with atopies (asthma). A retrospective study on articles published in journals from 2000 to 2010 has been undertaken, especially on the data bases of SciELO, SBP, OMS, ABESO, Medical Guidelines and Ministry of Health. Inclusion criteria of articles comprise available whole scientific articles which deal with the above-mentioned theme, with significant sampling and methodology. Obesity causes structural and functional alterations on the respiratory system corroborated by lung functioning. Its influence ranges from the degree of obesity to the emergence of ventilatory disorders and other complications, with the eventual rise of asthma.
