Abstract

Current research characterizes and compares the nutrition condition of patients diagnosed with breast cancer and other cancer diagnoses. The transversal study consisted of an interview dealing with the variables age, gender, time interval from diagnosis, anti-cancer therapy higher than 10 sessions, changes in weight and appetite during treatment, collateral effects, weight when diagnosed, current weight, height and Body Mass Index (BMI). According to cancer diagnosis, two groups of females were analyzed: Group I comprised females with breast cancer; Group II comprised females with our types of cancer. Fifty-three female patients were evaluated, or rather, 26.4% with breast cancer and 73.6% with other types of cancer; mean age was 56.0±9.95 and 58.4±16.05 respectively for Groups I and II. Mean weight and BMI were 80.3 kg and 32.5 kg/m2 for Group I and 60.8 kg and 27.6 kg/m2 for Group II (p=0.006; p=0.009), with 66.0% of patients overweight. When the groups´ nutritional conditions were analyzed, overweight was significantly higher in patients with breast cancer, or rather, 92.8% against 56.4% for the other females (p=0.01). Results show that body weight favors the development of breast cancer in females.
