Abstract

The elderly population has high chronic illness indexes, such as systemic blood hypertension (SBH). Non-pharmacological interventions, such as physical exercises, are indicated as efficient to decrease arterial pressure (AP). Current analysis, a descriptive and transversal study undertaken during 24 hours, verifies hypertensive elderly people´s arterial pressure response at several instances in a program of monitored physical activities (PMPA). Consequently, 3417 elderly people with SBH and treated pharmacologically, were distributed into an experimental (EG) (n=1919) and a control group (CG) (n=1498) at two instants, pre- and post-PMPA. BMI, systolic (SAP) and diastolic (DAP) arterial pressure were evaluated at the start and after 24 months PMPA in EG and CG. Paired t test and two-way ANOVA coupled to Kolmogorov-Smirnov at significant level p<0.05 were undertaken to compare intergroups. EG featured mean age and standard deviation of 68.7±6.9 years and CG with 68.7±7.1 years. Weight predominance occurred in all groups without any significant difference in post-PMPA (p=0.753). Initial similarity between the groups was altered by PMPA in the EG but was kept in CG. Intergroup comparison revealed differences in SAP (p=0.01) and DAP (p=0.01) pre- and post-PMPA in CG with SAP decrease and with DAP post-PMPA. The latter did not occur in CG. Monitored physical activities program had an important role as a non-medicine therapeutic model in the hypotensive response under analysis.
