Abstract

Several studies on the health benefits caused by physical activities during adolescence are extant. Surveys in Brazil reveal low percentages of active young people. Inactive displacement is one of the factors that contributes towards such inactivity. Current research identifies the type of displacement in school adolescents and relates it to their socio-demographic profile. Fifty-nine students (37 females and 22 males), aged between 13 and 19 years old, in the 9th year of Elementary Education of a government school in the town of Paulista PE Brazil participated in the study. The adolescents answered two subjective questions on displacement to school and the Chi-Square and Frequency Distribution test was applied. Results show that 57.6% of school adolescents go to school by bicycle or on foot. The frequency rate of active displacement was higher in students living in the countryside and those with mothers featuring schooling of ? 8 years, demonstrating a significant association of the variables with displacement. Current study showed that more than half the school adolescents displaced themselves actively and underscored the importance of public policies to raise the indexes of physical activity.
