Abstract

Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) causes approximately 7.6 million deaths per year worldwide. According to the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC), the prevalence of hypertension averages 32%; more than 50% in people within the 60 - 69 years bracket; 70% in elderly people over 70 years old. A bibliographical review on scientific data bases was undertaken on the factors related to adhesion or non-adhesion to anti-hypertension treatment by the elderly. Current analysis investigated the scientific production on health with regard to the influence of adhesion of elderly people on medical treatments for hypertension. Results showed that a constant and judicious assessment of adhesion determinants of the treatment by elderly patients is required so that strategies may be established to reduce or eliminate lack of adhesion and provide health promotion and longevity with life quality to this population.
