Abstract

Obesity, as a cardiovascular risk factor, is on the increase. Current analysis verifies the association between Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist Circumference (WC) with regard to risks in cardiovascular diseases. The transversal analysis with retrieval of secondary data comprised attendance charts of adult patients between ≥30 and ≤59 years old, of both sexes, attended to in a school nutrition clinic in Maringá PR Brazil, between 2009 and 2012. Further, 686 clinical charts were analyzed, of which 83.2% were of female patients. There was a positive association (p=0.0000) between the anthropometric indicators BMI and WC with regard to cardiovascular risks. Results show the importance and the needs of a joint employment of the indicators in the patients´ nutritional/anthropometric assessment to prescribe dietetic interventions which are more adequate and specific with regard to the cardiovascular risk.
