Abstract

Perception and knowledge degree of adolescents on mouth health are investigated. Population comprised 144 students (average age 14.6 years) of a government-run school in a town in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, by questionnaire for data collection. Most (82%) reported that their last visit to the dentist´s was less than one year and the main cause was routine and prevention; 90% were informed on mouth health, with the dentist as the main informant. Gender failed to be influential (p=0,21) for the indication of information sources. Mean self-assessment score from 0 to 10 was 7,76 for mouth health status; 7,77 for habits in mouth hygiene; 7,51 for teeth aesthetics. Pain (teeth or/and gums) score during the previous 12 months was 1,81. The worst performance involved the concept of caries. Adolescents under analysis showed a satisfactory level of self-perception and knowledge on mouth health.
