Abstract

Considering that depression is more common in postpartum affective disorder and affects both the mother as the baby’s health, this work was carried out to determine the prevalence of postpartum depression and its risk factors in mothers attended in a public hospital in Maringá-PR. Between 45 and 60 days after normal delivery or c-section, 50 women answered for a scale for the detection of depressive symptoms (Edinburgh Scale) and a questionnaire for assessing psycho social demographic characteristics such as age, marital status, level of education, occupation, number of children , number of prenatal visits, the father's reaction to pregnancy, and if there was an attempt to interrupt the pregnancy. The results were described in a quantitative and analyzed by Fisher's exact test with significance level p<0.05*. It was shown a prevalence of 28% of DPP, which was significantly associated with occupation (p=0.0422*), the father's reaction to pregnancy (p=0.0119*) and planning of pregnancy (p=0.0296*). These results show that the prevalence of PPD found is high and is close to the average prevalence found in other studies, thus indicating the need for greater health attention of professionals, particularly the nurses, in relation to mental health of pregnant women and parturients.
