Lifestyle and Eating Habits in Diabetic Patients

Abstract

The objective of this research was to characterize dietary habits and lifestyle of patients with diabetes Mellitus, seen in Basic Health Unit(BHU). The research was with 83 people of both sexes, between 11 and 97 years old, with Diabetes Mellitus type 1 and 2 treated in a BHU. A questionnaire was used with 26 direct questions, to identify the participants, lifestyle, data on the disease and dietary habits, the results were analyzed using qui-square test, to verify the association between the variables of significance, p <0.05. Among the 83 respondents 72.29% were female, and 27.71% were male. Related to the weight of the interviewees, 81.92% had from 50 to 90 kg and 92.77% referred to Type 2 diabetes and 7.23% referred to the type 1. Among the patients who reported having diabetes from 2 to 5 years, 69.23% considered that the most appropriate was changing their eating habits and 65% reported not practicing any kind of physical activity. As the duration of the disease grows individuals are abandoning the practice of healthy habits and physical activity, thereby contributing to the increase in instances of complications arising from diabetes.
