Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of speech-language therapy intervention in patients with obesity during the pre- and postoperative periods of bariatric surgery, assessing its impact on stomatognathic structures and functions. This was a randomized controlled clinical trial with quantitative analysis. Patients were randomly allocated to the Intervention Group or the Control Group. Assessments included appearance/posture, mobility (lips, tongue, mandible, and cheeks), and functions (breathing, swallowing, and mastication), as well as the frequency of vomiting episodes in the postoperative period. The Intervention Group participated in speech-language therapy training through the Orofacial Myofunctional Intervention Program for Individuals with Obesity. The protocol was initiated 60 days before the surgical procedure and completed 40 days after surgery, totaling 14 face-to-face sessions. Therapy in the Intervention Group demonstrated effectiveness in increasing scores related to appearance, lips, tongue, cheeks, swallowing, and mastication, in addition to reducing the percentage of postoperative vomiting episodes. It is concluded that the effect of speech-language therapy intervention in patients with obesity during the pre- and postoperative periods of bariatric surgery was significant, improving the mobility and tonicity of orofacial structures as well as the stomatognathic functions of swallowing and mastication. Speech-language therapy plays a fundamental role in optimizing oral conditions in patients with obesity, contributing to feeding efficiency and oral muscle function.
