Morphometric Analysis of Nadh-Diaphorase Positive Neurons of the Jejunum of Wistar Rats at Different Ages

Abstract

The enteric nervous system is a division of the independent nervous system, consisting of the ganglionated myenteric and submucous plexuses. It acts by regulating the functions of the gastrointestinal tract, and from adulthood, suffers a continual process of neurodegeneration. Aging involves changes in certain aspects of gastrointestinal structure and function, resulting in a reduction in the peristalsis frequency and amplitude, as well as complications in nutrients digestion and absorption. So it was decided to study the NADH density -diaphorase positive neuronal plexus of jejunum in rats of different ages (21, 60, 90, 210 days), using the NADH-diaphorase histochemical method in membrane preparations of jejunum in rats Wistar. By morphometry nitrergic neurons subpopulation of the old mice jejunum, positive for NADH-diaphorase technique, the results of this study demonstrate that there is a natural increase in the area of neurons in the first weeks of life. Upon adulthood, the mean area of neurons is diminished, associated with the onset of neuronal loss and remains without significant changes during the rest of the animal's life.
