Abstract

A parasitological analysis of 200 vegetables commercialized in the region of Araxá MG Brazil, was performed, during the dry and rainy seasons in 2011. The samples were washed one by one and the residue liquid was analyzed by spontaneous sedimentation. There was no parasitological contamination in tomatoes and apples. Analysis on oranges was positive during the dry season with an Ascaris lumbricoides egg. On the other hand, concern existed due to the parasitological contamination of lettuces especially during the dry season. Lettuce contamination level reached 44% during the dry period and 12% during the rainy period. Parasites in the lettuces comprised Entamoeba histolytica / Entamoeba dispar, ancylostomiasis and Giardia lamblia. Infecting parasites in lettuces, especially during the dry period, show risks of transmission and a highly relevant datum for public health policy.
