Abstract

Medicines are produced for treatment and cure and to minimize the symptoms caused by disease. The inadequate disposal of unused medicines may contribute towards the reuse of residues in water, soil and air, with impacts on the environment and public health. A bibliographical research based on data by Scielo, Latindex, Lilacs and on such sources as ANVISA, Health and Environment Ministry was undertaken. Review assessed current situation in Brazil with regard to disposal of medicines, with special attention to impact and people´s awareness. The terms disposal of unused medicine, manners of disposal of medicines and medicine residues were employed as the main descriptors. Results show that medicine inadequately disposed may cause serious impacts to the environment and to health. The urgent awareness of the population and the implementation of actions to minimize impacts of inadequate disposal in the environment are mandatory. There are in fact no effective rules for the disposal of medicines at the home level. The introduction of a Brazilian Policy for Solid Residues proposes, albeit still under analysis, the implantation of a take-back logistic system of the residues by the manufacturers and thus contributes towards a solution for their adequate treatment.
