Prevalence of Iron-Deficiency Anemia and Consumption of Iron in Hospitalized Children

Abstract

Iron-deficiency anemia is a lack of iron and hemoglobin decrease in the body. It is the highest extensive nutritional deficiency worldwide. Current analysis determines the relationship between prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia and iron consumption in hospitalized children. Descriptive research employs the clinical charts of 41 children hospitalized from August to October 2007 in a government hospital in Maringá PR Brazil. Iron-deficiency anemia was characterized by hemoglobin rate <11g/dl and the classification of nutritional status comprising weight-age using the z-score. Adequacy of iron intake followed the Dietary Reference Intakes and Chi-square test and Student’s t test were employed for data analysis. Results showed iron-deficiency anemia in 70.74% of the children and 90.26% with eutrophic nutritional status, with no significant differences between the sexes. Moreover 66% of eutrophic children were anemic, with no significant relationship between malnutrition and iron-deficiency anemia. When iron consumption was taken into account, 68.2% of the children were below the recommended rate and anemic. Most children investigation in current research had iron-deficiency anemia with eutrophic nutritional status.
