Dietary patterns of Brazilian university students in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract

The aim was to evaluate the dietary patterns of university students. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study, including adult students of both sexes. This research was carried out using an online questionnaire and, for dietary intake, a validated food frequency questionnaire was used. Dietary patterns were identified using the principal components factor analysis method. 397 university students from 10 undergraduate courses were included (82.6% women). Two distinct dietary patterns were identified (Western and Healthy) and 53.9% of university students were categorized into the Western dietary pattern, with no differences between men and women (P=0.631). When comparing courses, only nutrition and pharmacy had a higher prevalence of healthy dietary patterns. Thus, this research demonstrated a high prevalence of university students with an unhealthy dietary pattern, demonstrating the importance of carrying out institutional actions or campaigns reinforcing the importance of healthy eating for the health of these students.
