Abstract

There is a great concern in cases of infectious keratitis in contact lenses users. Lack of information and hygiene is the main cause since contaminated hands and lens solutions bear pathogens to the ocular mucous. Lenses on the cornea make it more sensitive to contamination and they cause small lesions when manipulated. Multiuse solutions may eliminate or at least decrease the growth of microorganisms but their efficiency is not always guaranteed. Current bibliographical review investigates the efficiency of these solutions with regard to the main fungi and bacteria that attack contact lens users. The solutions seem to be highly satisfactory when dealing with contamination by bacteria, which is not the case when fungus and amoeba are involved. The several mechanisms developed by the microorganisms to avert the medical activity explain this fact.
