APPLICATION OF NUTRITIONAL SELECTION PROTOCOLS IN HOSPITALIZED ELDERLY PEOPLE

Abstract

Literature proposes different nutrition selection methods to determine quickly nutritional diagnosis and at a low cost. Current analysis identifies the agreement level between the nutritional diagnosis in hospitalized elderly patients by protocols Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), Global Subjective Nutritional Evaluation (GSNE) and Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS-2002) to determine which nutritional selection tool is closest to the already proven MNA. A transversal investigation was performed in two government hospitals in Assis SP Brazil and 102 elderly patients, with 54% females, mean age 72.3 ± 9.4 years, were evaluated. MNA scored the highest malnutrition rates (69%), followed by NRS-2002 (45%) and ANSG (7%), regardless of gender, within the distribution of relative frequency of nutritional diagnosis according to the application of nutritional selection protocols. So that the reliability of diagnosis methods ANSG and NRS-2002, with MNA as standard, could be evaluated, agreement degree between the methods was assessed. Better agreement (fair to good) by NRS-2002 with MNA and a significant association between the nutritional selection protocols were detected. Results show that protocol NRS-2002 fitted reference method MNA, in contrast with ANSG. NRS-2002 is a fast, easy and sensitive tool to detect malnutrition to use in hospitals.
