Abstract
Public expenditure in health and its relationship with the population of the municipalities of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, is analyzed. Current descriptive, analytic and retrospective study used secondary data for the 2009-2013 period, collected from the Information System on Public Expenditures in Health and from Cidades@ of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Statistical analysis was undertaken with Microsoft Excel for Mac® 2011. Comparison of averages of financial resources in health between groups of municipalities according to their population showed statistically significant differences in all the years under analysis, except for 2013. The greater the population in the municipality, the smaller the percentage impact of financial resources in health within the public administration. Small municipalities had the highest average percentages and revealed that health is a burdensome sector demanding special attention by the public administrator.
